Spirit of Death
Spirit of Death
Labels: Spirit of DeathSpirit of DeathWe turned the corner to Mitchell’s street in the van. We all were elated when we saw Mitchell sitting in his new Power Wheelchair in a neighbor’s driveway. I asked Todd to drive down to the end of the block so could turn around and park. We could go down and talk to Mitchell. As we pulled up we were quickly recognized as outsiders. In many neighborhoods we seem to get quick glances or an inquisitive look. Not this stop. These guys looked at us while sitting on their front steps with utter disgust and a burning hatred. I smiled at one of our prayer group and said it looks like these guys are interested in a fight. Let’s Go!To Donate to this Ministry Click Here
I went up to one of them and extended my hand with an introduction. For a quick moment I wasn’t sure what was going to happen next. It was definitely an uneasy feeling all the way around. As soon as I said that we were out praying in their neighborhood tonight it was like a bomb went off in the spirit. Something changed. The Holy Spirit showed up! The mood changed in an instant. It went from utter disgust to him giving me a Hug and shaking my hand. It is like he changed in an instant. I have never witnessed anything like that!! God, like a light switch, turned hatred into love. It wasn’t slowly or gradually. It was instant. About as extreme on both ends as you could get. The intense hatred in a twinkling of an eye was turned to Love. And not just Love, but Drew hugged me and our group. He waved his wife Sheila from her car. She was inside with the windows rolled up. The car was an old Jeep Grand Cherokee that was grey in color. It looked like it didn’t have much left. He yelled over to her that we were here to pray and she flew open the door to the Jeep. She came out weeping and wailing as she severely limped toward us. It was so loud that I went over to her extending my arm to help. Her words were unintelligible. She was trying to talk and motion us inside the house. The steps were broken down and unsteady. The top had plywood from the step to the house. The house had two apartments on the inside. Drew kept saying, “She needs prayer.” He said that over and over as she wailed. Sheila was about as far down as you could get. She finally slowed down long enough for us to understand what she was saying. Her Mother died last year. Sheila had an extremely troubled past. She was an alcoholic. She abused crack and sold it for many years. She spent time in prison because of her drug habit. She said that she was able to give up crack four years ago. She has not been able to give up drinking though. Her liver is failing and doctors didn’t giver much hope. Her son was just sentenced to 25 years in prison. She was holding on to the disappointment and failure as a mother. That was not all. Her brother recently died at the age of 36. She continued wailing as she showed us proud pictures of her brother and mother. She said her Mother was someone who always supported her and believed that she could beat drugs and become a good mother.
I think the weight of putting her Mother through such stress and anguish was finally hitting her. When her husband went to work as a cook for a restaurant at night, her friend across the street would come over and sit with her. The neighborhood was pretty tough and considering her past history with the drug scene left her with some paranoia. Some of it was probably justified. The neighbor and one of her best friends had a name called Big Boy. She was still crying profusely. She told us that Big Boy died just two weeks ago. Just when she said those last words, Todd looked over at me and said, “There is a Spirit of death here”. He could sense it. There was a deep dark heaviness as we stood in the room. We prayed to break the evil powers and their authority in the house. I asked her why she was limping and she said she was hit by a beer bottle. She was taken to the hospital the night before and the bottom of her foot was full of stitches. Drew also stated that their house was continually a target of theft. Drew had his own story of overcoming an addiction to crack. It is amazing sometimes when we have our agenda and God interrupts us with His. I Love this scripture:
but the Lord’s decree will prevail.
We had a plan to see Mitchell. God Planned for us to confront darkness that plagues this neighborhood. The battle culminated at that house. Thank God for the Holy Spirit. If you really want a jump start and a whole refreshing to wash over your body. They hugged us all as we started to walk out of the apartment. They thanked us over and over for stopping in to pray for them.
Here are some of my thoughts running through my head as we were leaving. As bad as her situation was God brought hope in the middle of it. She simply couldn’t believe that strangers came to her house to pray for her tough situation. Todd asked her about her belief in Jesus and talked to her about his experiences that related to the situation. He also discussed the toll drugs can play on your life physical, mental, and spiritual. It was heartbreaking to see this woman. She was sitting there believing that she failed most everyone in her life. Many of them were gone and the damage couldn’t be repaired. God is a God of reconciliation. Jesus came to reconcile us to the Father. If you have not given your Life to Jesus, do it RIGHT NOW. Get a Bible and start reading the Truth daily. I have always said that I believe our groups first mandate is to change atmosphere or spiritual landscape of an area. When you stop and look at it in a nutshell. Here we are strangers in a strange neighborhood. Drew is looking at us like he wants to harm us. Two minutes later we are standing in his living room hugging with his wife crying her eyes out to us. You can’t say that God doesn’t transform situations. I don’t think we can understand all of the spiritual things that happened in that house on that night.
Please Pray for Sheila and Drew
We left her house and walked to the driveway where we saw Mitchell. He was gone. The said he was probably on his way to the River.
